    Finding Room for the Creative Class: Introducing El Gouna Innovation Hub

    Creative industries have become pivotal in urban development and regeneration. Due to this fact, Egypt is aiming to embrace the international wave of creativity. However, the concentration of urban settlements, infrastructure, services and economic activities in Greater Cairo and Alexandria blocks the opportunity of economic equality and prosperity in the rest of the country. This thesis suggests that the creative class could break the chain and help in equalizing urban planning disparities in Egypt. The aim of the thesis is to introduce an interdisciplinary pilot feasibility study for a creative neighborhood in El Gouna, an Egyptian resort located on the Red Sea 25 kilometers North Hurghada. The study begins with reviewing relevant planning theories related to innovative hubs and their linkage to economic development. El Gouna case is unique in the Egyptian context since the town is owned by a private developer who is independent from the government strategies. Accordingly, a brief analysis of the town will be introduced. Aspects of urban planning, infrastructure, economy, ecology and laws are to be analyzed. The resultant is a pilot feasibility study for initiating an innovative hub imbedded in the context of El Gouna. Positive agreement and initiatives have already appeared by the owner company to inhabit the innovative hub in the downtown area that is planned to be gentrified.

    Integrated EDM and 4D BIM-based DSS for construction projects control

    In practical life, it is a big challenging dilemma that all building projects must adhere to the contract's deadlines. Today, most construction projects are delivered behind schedule. This is due to lack of well-organized tracking and monitoring for the projects and ensuring schedule adherence. Furthermore, the project control tools that are mostly used today, as Earned Schedule (ES) and Earned Value (EV), are not able to give exact indications of the project's performance in terms of time. The goal of the present research is to create a Decision Support System (DSS) for assisting contractors to track and monitor construction projects activities during construction in a more efficient manner. Moreover, it facilitates visualizing the performance of the activities through an integrated system based on Earned Duration Management (EDM) metrics and BIM environment. The proposed system combines EDM and BIM to achieve the research goals. By making a questionnaire for site engineers based on their experience, a Monte Carlo – based in the simulation process was conducted to obtain all various probabilities of this project total duration, at different scenarios. Afterwards, the project's duration was then calculated using Monte Carlo simulation to determine this confidence level of each duration, at different project phases. The results generated from both analyses were then visualized using a 3D model that enables decision-makers in taking the right decisions for their projects with no problems encountered. Based on the proposed system, a user-friendly tool operating in windows environment was developed using spread sheet to facilitate the analysis processes. To validate the model performance, real construction project data were used, in which the results were close to those of the real case study at each update. Finally, when the developed system was used to test its capabilities on real projects, it demonstrated a high level of dependability, visualization, and overall performance.

    Examining Users’ Preferences of Furniture Arrangements in Relation to Experiential Learning Activities in Architectural Design Studios, with Reference to Cairo, Egypt

    Architectural education is a complex discipline that needs specific spatial requirements. Architectural design studio is the backbone of architectural education. For that the setting of the studio affects students’ productivity, it should suit the learning process and activities to help students. Yet, many studios follow the traditional grid setting. The experiential learning cycle developed by Kolb in 1984 is known to be an effective educational strategy in architecture. It consists of four stages, which are: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation that balance between input and output data through 18 learning activities. In order to fully realize the requirements of the experiential learning cycle, there is spatial requirements, and seating arrangement. Specifically, should be taken into consideration. There are five arrangements that are known for organization which are centralized/u-shaped, linear, radial, clustered, and grid arrangements. The linear arrangement was excluded from the study as it is not applicable in design studio. The aim of the study is to investigate the preferable seating arrangement for each studio activity to best realize the goals of architectural/ experiential education. The study was carried out at four universities in Cairo, Egypt. An online survey was completed by 322 participants from 3rd, 4th, and 5th year undergraduate students and staff members. The results were analyzed quantitatively using (IBM SPSS) Statistical Package for Social Science 28 software. The findings suggest that the seating arrangement can be easily changed to suit the users’ needs that centralized/u-shaped arrangement is best for eight activities, namely reading, giving examples, large group discussion, thought questions, logical analyses, analogies, case study analyses, analyses and critiques. Radial arrangement best fits four activities: problem set, games/ role playing, small group discussion, and brainstorming. Clustered arrangement showed to be best for physical model making and reflecting on design. At last, grid arrangement was suitable for trigger videos, journals, lectures, and computer simulation activities. It is hoped that the findings of this study may help architecture educators and administrators take more informed decisions regarding the seating arrangement in architectural design studios, in relation to different learning activities towards realizing more desirable outcomes.
